Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 8th January, 2017

Today's weather;

A later than usual update but all is fine with me. It's Sunday morning and that usually means long morning runs for me and today was no different, except today I couldn't start until 6am, it's too dangerous to run in the dark under these conditions. I managed 21km in around one hour and 54 minutes, which considering the circumstances is really good. I ran yesterday as well and about 20 to 25% of the roads were ankle deep with water, today only three small sections were ankle deep. There was still a lot of water on the road, but nothing more than foot deep and a lot of floods have receded and/or disappeared.
This morning saw a range from no rain, to drizzle to light rain changing positions all the time around Koh Samui. The hard and torrential rain seems to have gone.
The airport is up and running with planes taking off and landing all the time, so hopefully they can take care of their back log.
It seems the January 2017 floods are on their last legs. It's not over yet but it's slowing down however one more batch of hard rain is still predicted for this morning. We'll see how that pans out. Current temp at 9am is 25C

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 8th January, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand daily weather update; 8th January, 2017; Bang Rak bay this morning, still a grey and cloudy sky but not that much rain anymore and the water doesn't have that brown color anymore. Things are slowly on the upside again.

Yesterday saw rain almost all day long but it was a lot lighter rain and we had many rain breaks as well. Still, a lot of roads were still flooded, like at the Chaweng lake and roundabout, at the area where the one way systems starts and around Centara Grand Beach resort. At the Bophud traffic lights it was also still full on flood. Many other areas saw some easing up during the afternoon. Max temp reached 26C

The forecast keeps pushing back that end of the rain. Now it seems that Monday will have light amounts of rain and the cloud cover is about to break open come Wednesday. After that it looks really good into next weekend with plenty of sunshine. Who knows!
Just keep hanging in there, today may see one more time some hard rain and tonight some hard wind but it may well be the end of this rain period.

Hi Camille I would like to thank you for this blog I finally found something really informative and helpful about koh samui.
I was just wondering if this flooding will impact the hygiene of the restaurant and the quality of the food in this period of time and also whether this will impact the visibility in the ocean (for snorkeling). Cheers

I asked my dive center the same question and they said that visibility will be impaired for at least a few days, up towards a week in worst case.

There's no reason why the food should be affected but snorkeling will definitely be affected for a few days to possibly a week.

Hi Erik,

Exactly the same answer I gave! :-)

Hi Camille! Our plane arrives the 10th morning in Samui and our first stop is in Koh Tao. Our Resort is 'suggesting' us to don't go until the 12!
I know you are based in Koh Samui but do you have any news about Koh Tao? What would you do? Better to spend couple of days in Samui as it's a bigger and more equipped island or stick with Tao and hoping for the best? :)

Anyway thank you for all this great information you give everyday!

Hi Simon,

Check my Samui info and weather blog Facebook page and make up your own mind, but since when don't you trust locals who own hotels and they tell you not to come? You think they don't want to make money?

I checked the weather forecast for all January, from now on we will have just 5 or 6 sunny days in Samui other thunderstorms are forecasted for around the 24th till the 31st and other rainy days around the middle of the month.

Hi Mario,

It's probably not as bad as you expect it to be. First of all this was unusual and is not likely to be repeated for a third time within a month and a half and secondly, these long term forecasts draw thunderstorm icons for even when they expect just a few drops. Look at the percentage of precipitation, if that's like 20% or 30%, it means chances of rain are measured in that amount of %

Hi,
I would like to know the weather situation in Koh Samui at this moment. It there flooding? We are in Krabi after 3 rainy days and dont know what is better: to stay here for another three days or go to Koh Samui. What you would recommend us?

Thank you in advance,
Veronica

My family are arriving Koh Samui 2 February. We have read about the last period of raining. Do you think we should go to the western part of Thailand or will your eastern islands be ok early February? Do you think we should stick to our plan and go to Samui, Koh Paghnang and koh Tao? The hotels in Krabi etc. start getting crowded... We have made our hotelbookings and I have to admit that I'm a bit concerned. / David A Skymbäck

David,

Both parts of Thailand you mention had water issues and both parts should be fine by now. Please check also my Samui info and weather blog Facebook page for up to date information and make your own decisions.
