Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 19th June – 25th June, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 19th June – 25th June, 2017

It's Sunday and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 19th June – 25th June, 2017.

It's already 4pm and I was too tired and sleepy after a very early wake up call and participation in the Bangkok Air Koh Samui half marathon today, which had a 5am start. I came second in my age group in a not so great time of one hour and 57 minutes and was 12th all over out of some 170 participants.

Nonetheless, it was not a great day weather wise, with lots of rain from around 10am. It's still cloudy but dry at the moment. Current temp at 4pm is 30C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 19th June – 25th June, 2017; Main street or ring road in Maenam

Last week saw some fairly wet days, most days had some rain in some sort, from small showers to some tropical thunderstorms. Max temperatures ranged around 32 to 34C.
Not the best of week for weather but come a lot worse as well. There was still a few sunny breaks throughout the week.

The forecast for next week is looking ok-ish. Plenty of cloud cover is predicted for the next seven days with an occasional shower and possibly some wind.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 19th June – 25th June, 2017; Bangkok Air Koh Samui half marathon, top finishers with me coming in at second place in my age group, earlier today. A Thai at first place, Dutch # 3, Japan #3, Danish #4 (not in the picture) A very international winners stage indeed.

Please do 'like' my Koh Samui blog Facebook page and enjoy the beaches around the island or in front of your hotel or resort and get some well deserved rest and a break. If you're done resting or need something else to do, there's plenty of things on offer on and around Koh Samui, you can go snorkeling or diving or take a dive course. You can also enjoy some of the trips I recommend, like a half day gourmet lunch and snorkeling trip at the Southern part of Koh Samui or a photography trip where you get to see the most photo genetic spots on the island or go for a drinks tasting tour if you like a tipple or two.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th June – 18th June, 2017

It's Sunday and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 12th June – 18th June, 2017.
It's almost noon and it's partially cloudy and hot around Koh Samui, 32C already!

This morning I ran my first trail run in Thailand in Kamala on Phuket, with a very steep hill which lasted almost 2.5km. The total distance of the race was 10.3km and I finished 9th all over out of 400 participants and 3rd in my age group of 40+. A very unexpected but nice result.

Later this afternoon, or rather soon, I will my June 2017 PADI IDC candidates for their last part of their PADI IE at Kata beach to see if they made it into the PADI Instructor ranks.

It's also partially cloudy on Phuket towards noon and with a current temp of 34.7C

The next Samui Green Market will be on 2nd July

The next Samui Green Market will be on 2nd July

The next Samui Green Market will be on 2nd July at Elysia Boutique Resort in Fisherman's Village between 3 and 7pm.

As always it's all about promoting locally grown, sourced, crafted and brewed products. I love the various and different breads on sale, but there is a lot more on offer than just bread and a lot of the products and food on offer are organic.
Many different products, a lot of them food related will be on sale. French cheeses, products from Sweet Sisters and a few hotels have food related options for sale. Also not to forget is the Elysia itself, that usually sells some lovely food to eat during the Green Market.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th May – 4th June, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th May – 4th June, 2017

It's Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th May – 4th June, 2017.

As almost every day this week, it started out with a nice and blue sky but also a fairly strong wind, earlier this morning, The wind is still holding up but the blue sky is slowly being replaced by some more clouds. Current temp at 11.30am is 32C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th May – 4th June, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 29th May – 4th June, 2017; The beach in front of Zazen Boutique Resort, nice lovely and fairly quiet this time of the year. Just before it starts to get busy again!

Last week saw nice and sunny blue skies in the morning, especially later during the week but the blue skies were often replaced by cloudy skies and a bit of rain. At times we saw very hard rain with minor floods. Max temperatures ranged from 32 to 35C, so hot and humid.

The forecast predicts more strong wind, maxing out on Tuesday and some thunderstorms combined with some tropical showers. As of Tuesday it should be fairly cloudy, so not too sure about the amount of sunshine that can be expected during next week.
Still a good time to enjoy some of the tours that are on offer as explained below!

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

It's been a while since I posted an update in my Food on Wheels series but now it's time for this lovely blog post about Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town.
Whilst walking Thalang road the other day, this older man was passing by, selling tofu pudding with ginger syrup to local people sitting in their houses and shops.

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town; The cart as we all know it by now but this time with a surprising and fairly unusual food; Thaw Huwai Naam King or Tofu with (ginger) herbs

Initially I had no idea what this was and what to expect and as with so many other Thai street food, I didn't think it would be very healthy and passed. A few moments later my wife joined me and she explained what it was and I was more than willing to try this tofu pudding with ginger syrup and it was delicious. Not sweet at all but rather tasty.

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town; The tofu is being scraped with a wooden tool, into bowls and the herbal sauce or ginger syrup is added. A very delicious dish is the result. It's not sweetened, but rather hearty

The tofu is literally sliced off a big pile of tofu with a wooden tool and the ginger syrup is added in the bowl or plastic bag if you want to take it home. It needs to be eaten fairly soon after purchasing it since it doesn't stay well overnight, as we found out.

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town; Touring the streets of Phuket town and the old part as well

In case you encounter this very friendly person with his tofu pudding, don't hesitate to try it but go for it, you won't be disappointed. It also won't break the bank, so at the odd chance you don't like it, you will survive!

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town

Food on Wheels; Tofu with herbs in Phuket Old Town; Still going strong after all these years, but what do you expect with such healthy food!

It seems to get harder and harder to get by some original Food on Wheels stories, but I'm glad that I can post this one, a real gem from (almost) times gone by.

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort

It seems like it's becoming a yearly tradition, a Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort in Bophud/Maenam.

For the third year running, the Zazen Boutique Resort had their staff trained and updated about box jelly fish threats, awareness and how to handle during box jelly fish incidents.

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort; Almost twenty persons of Zazen's staff participated in this years awareness and prevention presentation. My wife, Khun Tassanee, accompanied me again, to help out with translations

It was good to see familiar as well as new faces during the presentation. It also shows the dedication and importance of Zazen's owners and management, to stay on top of events and their intent to look after the best interest and well being of their guests. Hopefully the information and practice provided will never be needed on or near Zazen's premises, but at least the staff had training and is prepared just in case.

Box jelly fish awareness and prevention presentation 2017 at Zazen Boutique Resort; CPR training was part of the presentation and this year there was a lot more enthusiasm from the staff to actually practice.

Thanks to Zazen Boutique Resort for the invite and the dedication they show.

Just remember, the four most important things to do when stung by a box jelly fish;

1 - Call for help, on Koh Samui that means call the Rescue service at 1169

2 - Make sure if the victim needs CPR

3 - Treat the stings and wounds with copious amounts of vinegar

4 -  Transport to a medical facility

Goodbye to May and welcome to June 2017

Goodbye to May and welcome to June 2017

It's a combined Goodbye to May and welcome to June 2017, so let's first look at what May brought us.

There was plenty of rain during this May and it was probably a little below average of what to expect during May. However, the times that we had sun it was immediately very warm with temperatures getting as high as 36C (imagine that combined with some rain, humidity just goes through the roof!) and lows of 31C

Today, the first day of June 2017, we have a cloudy sky although it's still dry with the sun occasionally trying to peek out from behind the clouds. Current temp at almost 2pm is 31C

Goodbye to May and welcome to June 2017

Goodbye to May and welcome to June 2017; The Chinese Temple in Maenam, this morning, just having completed a fixing it up job and looking splendid again

June is typically a fairly nice month on Koh Samui with plenty of sunshine but also with possibly some rain, as can be expected during this small monsoon period for our island. The West coast is typically more affected by this monsoon period. It's a good time to be on Koh Samui and enjoy the attractions the island has to offer; beaches, sun and some areas well worth checking out during a sight seeing trip.

Last month I spent two weeks on Phuket and this month I will be off to Phuket again, come Monday. It almost feels as if the rainy season on Phuket hasn't stopped this year! Plenty of rain and strong winds seemingly all year through with more in the pipeline for both coasts after this weekend.

It Sunday and time to look at the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 22nd – 28th May, 2017.

It's been dry ever after with even the sun peaking out again during the afternoon and a max temp of 32C

The Bot is the temple's most important building and this particular building is completely painted white, which looks kind of spectacular and impressive.

Monday and Tuesday I was diving from Phuket, to finish off PADI Specialty Instructor training with Glenn, one of my recent PADI IDC candidates on the May Phuket IDC who was also successful during the recent May PADI IE on Phuket.
A picture of our dives can be seen below.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 15th – 21st May, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 15th – 21st May, 2017

It's Sunday and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 15th – 21st May, 2017.
We're already at the late afternoon part of the day and it's partially cloudy with sometimes the feel of rain coming up. Current temp at 5.30pm is 32C and it's humid!

Currently I'm still a few more days on Phuket, before I return to Koh Samui on Wednesday. The candidates of the May 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket in conjunction with PADI CDC Center 'Dive Asia' just completed their PADI IE exam and are now brand new PADI Instructors!

Weather wise it was less glorious last week with plenty of rain and wind here, currently it's mostly cloudy with a temp of 30.7C at 5.30pm

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 15th – 21st May, 2017; Cable spaghetti in Chaweng. These are phone cables and not electricity, however, they still can cause problems. A few days prior they caught fire and caused a real 'mini' hassle! This was at the beginning of the month.

Last week was a very typical May week around Koh Samui, with a couple of dry and sunny days with partial cloud cover but there were also a couple of days with thunder storms and rain. Max temperatures ranged in between 32 and 34C.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 15th – 21st May, 2017; Phuket 'old' town, at the corner of Thalang Road and Soi Romannee. In this soi you can find the best ice cream parlor of Phuket, in my humble opinion.

The forecast for next week is looking good, a lot better than previous weeks of this this month. Hardly any rain, a few isolated tropical showers, no wind and partially clouded skies. It seems like it will be a good week for a May on Koh Samui. Go out and enjoy!

We're going to have a look at the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 8th - 14th May, 2017.
First we're going to have a look at today's weather though and it's fairly cloudy but the sun is peeking out a bit. Current temp at 7.30am is 26C although it feels a bit warmer, but it's most likely not going to be as warm as yesterday.

Currently I'm on Phuket, conducting the May 2017 PADI IDC, and the weather here is much worse. Since my arrival there was plenty of rain and only yesterday and the day before saw the sun come back out again. Next week is supposedly going to be a very wet week here! Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 1st - 7th May, 2017

At last, here's the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 1st - 7th May, 2017. Due to travelling to Hat Yai for a a wedding and computer problems, I couldn't update any earlier.

It's already almost at the end of the week by now but here we are, at last. It's partially cloudy on Koh Samui and there was some early morning rain with some more rain last night as well. Current temp at 9am is 30C

Last week it was hot and humid with max temperatures between 34 and 36C. We also has some light rain a few times. Typical tropical showers with some light to hard rain but for a very short moment only. Like a rather typical May week I would say.

Welcome to May 2017

Welcome to May 2017

It's Mayday and a good opportunity to say Welcome to May 2017. The month of May usually carries over part of the nice and sunny April weather, without the heat of April though.
Last year we had a rough ending of the month of May with strong winds but the previous three year were lovely.
May can also bring plenty of rain, which cools things down a little bit, something we can use after the last three scorching hot April weeks. Rain is mostly in the form of tropical showers, short but hard, but can also be a bit longer in some rare cases.

The forecast for the first May week this year is looking good though. Towards next weekend expect plenty of cloud cover though.

Welcome to May 2017

Welcome to May 2017; A suspended bridge at the end of Soi 5 in Maenam, near a nice and big waterfall, the Tan Rua waterfall. There's a platform and a restaurant for some snacks and cold drinks. Zip lines are also available for some added excitement

There are also a few events to look forward to this month. The Samui bike weekend is this coming weekend at Chaweng lake, the Samui Regatta will be held between 20th and 27th May and 28th May will see the mini marathon or 10km race in Nathon.

I do hope you will enjoy this May month on Koh Samui and do keep checking in for updates on weather and things to do around our lovely Koh Samui.

Goodbye to April 2017

Goodbye to April 2017

Just as this is also the last day of the week, it's also the last day of the month and that means that it's time to say Goodbye to April 2017.

The start of the month was very strange and very unusual for April. There were thunderstorms and floods a plenty during that first April week of 2017! The second time this year and the third time within five months. In all fairness, it wasn't as bad as during the December 2016 or January 2017 floods, but they did attract attention. Plus, as already mentioned, they were rather unusual floods for this time of the year!

After that first week, the weather turned nice quickly though and it was back to normal almost overnight. Especially last week the heat was turned up with max temps reaching 35C

Goodbye to April 2017

Goodbye to April 2017; Temple party at Wat Na Phra Lan in Maenam, next to the Lompraya pier. A small and quiet party of what once used to be one of the more influential temples on the island

The big event this month was Songkran or the Thai New Year celebrations. A good time was had in Chaweng with the family and it was busy.
For food we visited the usual suspects, Kobori, excellent Japanese food in Maenam and Nathon. Juzza Pizza was also on the list in Fisherman's Village and some awesome pork sateh and 'rad na' at Dcheed 2 at the ring road in Chaweng.

Here's to Goodbye to April 2017 and bring May 2017 on, as of tomorrow! See you all next month.

Here's the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 24th April – 30th April, 2017, the last week of this month of April 2017.
We're just past midday today, with a slightly cloudy sky and hot temperatures, current temp right now is 33C

The day started really early, at 3am with a 4am two and a half hour long slow distance run, as part of my 15 week training plan for the up and coming Koh Samui marathon on 25th June 2017. 16th Samui Regatta from 20th to 27th May 2017

 16th Samui Regatta from 20th to 27th May 2017

It's showtime again soon for the 16th Samui Regatta from 20th to 27th May 2017. The Samui Regatta is slowly but surely becoming an institution on Koh Samui, although in my book, still a bit of an event for the elite.

The event is proudly hosted by Centara Grand Beach Resort - Samui, which is widely regarded as the "Home of the Samui Regatta".

16th Samui Regatta from 20th to 27th May 2017

16th Samui Regatta from 20th to 27th May 2017

The Regatta is organised by Regattas Asia in conjunction with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta, under the auspices of the Province of Surat Thani, the Sports Authority of Thailand, the Municipal of Koh Samui, the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, The Tourism Association of Thailand, the International Sailing Federation and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand.

The Regatta has 4 key objectives:

Increase tourists to the island of Koh Samui.
Increase awareness and participation in watersports in Asia.
Establish Koh Samui as a leading Sailing Destination
Support youth education and sporting activities on the island.
Starting with just 11 boats, mainly made up of beach catamarans, the event gained a reputation for offering great hospitality and competitive sailing.

The fleet has now grown into one of the most competitive in Asia and is now placed as the final event of the prestigious Asian Yachting Grand Prix Championship. Crowning the 2016/2017 Asian Champion Skipper and Crew at the last night Awards and Gala Dinner. Held at Centara Grand Beach Resort.

Despite these challenging economic times, the event has grown every year to become a truly international event with around 500 competitors joining in annually from over 22 different countries. Generating an estimated 30 million baht worth of media coverage and over 18 million baht into the local Koh Samui economy annually.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th April – 23rd April, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th April – 23rd April, 2017

A day late but here we are nonetheless with the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th April – 23rd April, 2017.
Yesterday I was doing my lsd or long slow distance run. Pretty much immediately after that three hour run I was off to the local hyperbaric chamber for work. After that it was shopping and taking care of the children and visiting the Samui Green Market at Six Senses.
A busy day with not much time to update the blog, but today is looking different and here we are indeed.

It's almost 10am on a Monday morning and the sky is nice and blue with some clouds in it. Typical April weather and it looks like it will be sticky and hot, once more. Current temp at 10am is already at a whopping 33C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th April – 23rd April, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 17th April – 23rd April, 2017; Ready for take off. One of Bangkok Airways' Boeing 737 planes is ready for take off at Koh Samui airport. There's a short cut route that leads around the Northern runway, where you can spot the action. Planes coming in and taking off and giving great photo opportunities when you have to wait for the road to be opened up again.

Last week saw partially cloudy to fairly cloudy skies and we even had a few raindrops mid week. The last couple of days and over the weekend it was blue skies galore however and the max temp went up to 35C!

The forecast for this week is looking great in case you're in search of sunshine. A few isolated clouds, no rain and plenty of sunshine is out and about. Get that sun lotion ready and enjoy Koh Samui at it's hottest!

9th Samui Bike Week, 5-6 May 2017

9th Samui Bike Week, 5-6 May 2017

It's on again, the 9th Samui Bike Week, 5-6 May 2017 at the by now familiar location of Chaweng lake.
If you would like to see lot of cool big bikes, the 9th Samui Bike Week, 5-6 May 2017 is the right location for you and the place to be.

I have visited the Samui Bike week in the early days but during recent years I wasn't always on Samui when the vent took place. However the bikes on display are truly amazing. Lots of choppers and customized bikes can be spotted. A feats for the eye, in coolness and color level f the various bikes. Black is a favorite color in general but many bikes actually have some cool paint or spray jobs done.

Last week it was hot and sticky with hardly any rain at all, I don't recall seeing any rain at least where I was during last week. It was sometimes partially cloudy but it was also very humid. Temperatures ranged from 32C to 33C, so very solid.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 10th April – 16th April, 2017; Last week saw the Songkran festival around the island and all over Thailand, or the Thai New Years celebration. Here an action picture of Chaweng

The forecast for next week is looking good, sunny most days with the fresh breeze dropping and if you're lucky you find some quick and short tropical rain shower to cool things down a bit. April at it's best!

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng

It's hot and dry today, but that can't be said for Songkran 2017 in Chaweng yesterday. At least not the dry part! It was a lovely day with blue skies and hot, but by no means was it dry! The water fights were on all over the island as part of the Songkran tradition!

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng; A view of the chaos in front of the Central shopping mall

During the morning I played a bit with our children but the afternoon the whole family moved over to Chaweng to join the festivities there. Around 2.30pm we arrived with some of our friends and soon met up with more friends and their children. We were a big group of around ten people when we were all together.

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng; A foam party was very popular during the afternoon at Central shopping mall

Most of the time smaller groups split off from the main group though to enjoy certain areas of Chaweng. There was a good atmosphere in front of the Central shopping mall at Chaweng's beach road and the busiest part this year was without doubt at Bar Solo where crush barriers and security were deployed to keep the crowds in place and order.

It was busy as each year that I spent on Songkran on Koh Samui although it didn't seem to get really busy until around 4pm. In general I felt that it wasn't as busy in Chaweng as during previous years but there was a good atmosphere and the crowds were lined up all around the island, on the main road and all the smaller sois.

There were plenty of special activities around the Central shopping mall in Chaweng, like the foam party and concerts later during the afternoon and evening.
The late hours saw lots of folk out and about in the bar areas of the island, both in Chaweng (Soi Green Mango and Soi Reggae) and in Lamai.

Songkran 2017 in Chaweng; These masks were all the rage this year, they came in various colors and somewhere under the mask you can find our son

If you were on Koh Samui yesterday or in general in Thailand, I hope you enjoyed this years Songkran version! I'm really pleased that the water fights only take place during one day on Koh Samui but there are a few places around the country where two or three days is the norm. That's a little bit too much of a good thing for me!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 3rd April – 9th April, 2017

The Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 3rd April – 9th April, 2017 but first things first and that's today's update.

It's nice and sunny around Koh Samui this morning and a warm or rather hot day seems to be in the making. There are just a few isolated clouds in the sky so get that sun lotion out, whether you are on the beach today or on a trip around the island or on a boat for a snorkeling or diving trip! Current temp at 9am is 30C
This morning saw some rain though, around 5am, during my long Sunday morning run (26.6km in two and a half hours) for about half an hour and I enjoyed every minute of it during my run, since it cooled things down really nicely. Very enjoyable!

Don't miss out on on today's big event in Maenam where there will be a bike cross event all morning and into the afternoon.

Last week was as unusual for the start of the month of April as it can get! There was a lot of rain and plenty of flooded area around the island. By all means, not as bad as during the recent December and January floods, but they were very unusual. In all my 18 years now on Koh Samui I've only seen this before, and on a l\much larger scale back then, in 2011.
Since yesterday the sun is back again though and the weather has changed into a much more April like condition!

As a small welcome back celebration back home we had dinner at Kobori in Nathon yesterday and the Japanese food was up to the expected standard as always. Well worth checking out in either Nathon or Maenam.

All week long I was on Koh Lanta where we had sunny mornings and most of the time cloudy and rainy afternoons, also rather unusual for that time of the year on Koh Lanta.
The PADI IE went very well and all of my four candidates passed the exams very successfully.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 3rd April – 9th April, 2017; The pier on Koh Lanta where all ferries to Koh Phi Phi and Phuket as well as in South bound direction, like Koh Lipe and into Malaysia arrive and depart each day.

Now here's what most of you are looking forward to, the weather forecast for next week. Well, to keep it to the point, it looks like it's going to be fab! Sunny skies and warm and hot days are ahead of us next week and no rain at all is predicted!
Next Friday 14th April sees Songkran, if you are here on Koh Samui, an event not to be missed, and hard or impossible to miss. Enjoy it!
