Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th October – 15th October, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th October – 15th October, 2017

It's Sunday morning, 9.30am, the long Sunday morning run is done and it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th October – 15th October, 2017.

It's cloudy over Koh Samui and occasionally a drizzle can be observed. Current temp at 9.30am is a nice and fairly cool 27.7C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th October – 15th October, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 9th October – 15th October, 2017; Every day this week and last week there are ceremonies in different temples around the island, following up on the recent Ok Pansa celebration. Money is donated to the temples as part of making merit or 'tambhun' as they say in Thai. Here you can see a money tree or umbrella at Wat Na Phra Lan in Maenam, near the Lomprayah ferry. Today's ceremony is at the Laem Sor Pagoda. Each temple will also have a car or 'float' that will travel around the neighborhood, collecting donations. All these cars or 'floats' will gather in nathon later this week. Well worth a visit to Nathon and check it out, especially during the early evening.

Last week was a fairly good week for October, with a couple of days with sunshine, especially during the morning but there were also a couple of days with tropical showers. Maximum temperatures ranged between 30C and 33C

The forecast for next week predicts slightly cooler weather with a bit more rain in the form of tropical showers and a couple of thunderstorms. The sun might be out and about come mid next week.
Another typical October week in the making, enjoyable, with sunshine here and there although not too warm and most likely a few showers as well.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd October – 8th October, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd October – 8th October, 2017

It's Sunday morning, the clock just passed 10am, my Sunday morning long run is done ( half marathon distance) and it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd October – 8th October, 2017.

This morning it's very cloudy with a fairly strong wind blowing in and it looks like there may be some rain later today. It doesn't look like the sun is going to be out to play today! Current temp at 10.20am is 27.2C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd October – 8th October, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 2nd October – 8th October, 2017; The wheel of life at Wat Maenam or Wat Phu Khao Thong. We visited this temple last week during the funeral of a neighbor

Last week many days with some tropical thunder storms with short but heavy rain. The sun was out and about a few times last week and once the sun made an appearance, it quickly became very hot with a high humidity, so it was very 'sticky hot'. Max temperature reached 29C although a lot of times it felt much warmer.

For the next seven days, it looks same same but different. The difference being that I expect even some more rain of the tropical shower kind, culminating in a weekend with possibly some very strong wind.

Welcome to October 2017

Welcome to October 2017

Already the second day into this new month and a good moment to say 'Welcome to October 2017'.
What this month mostly will be about all around Thailand will be the final goodbye or funeral and cremation of King Bhumibol, scheduled to be on 26th October in Bangkok.
After one year of mourning the cremation will be the end of an era. Keep your eyes and ears open during this month for changes and even cancellations of planned events all around the country. I will keep my Facebook page updated on this topic.

Welcome to October 2017

Welcome to October 2017; King Bhumibol Adulyadej

On to the weather during October on Koh Samui though. October can be a tricky month, the last month before we typically have the monsoon or rainy season around Koh Samui. Most years the start of the month is fairly nice, just like this year looks like.
However, during the second part of the month and especially towards the end of the month, the rainy season may start and leave this month drenched in rain and possibly worse, floods! Two years ago was not a good month with lots of rain and last year the last October week was not good, with lots of rain.
For the time being, the beginning of October does look good but be prepared for possibly more rain towards the end of the month.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th September – 1st October, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th September – 1st October, 2017

It's Sunday afternoon again and that means that it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th September – 1st October, 2017.

It's nice and sunny right now, at almost 1pm under a hazy, slightly clouded sky with a current temperature of 29.7C. Yes, it's hot, humid and 'sticky' hot this afternoon but here was some rain last night.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 25th September – 1st October, 2017; A view on Chaweng Beach at Ozo Hotel. I was there earlier this week to check out their box jelly fish net, which is put in place right in front of the resort. A picture of this net can be seen here.

Last week saw two dry days and all other days saw some tropical showers, meaning; short but powerful showers. Just like today, most afternoon were warm though, this humid and 'sticky' warmth. Max temperatures ranged between 30C and 33C, so fairly steady.

For the next seven days, it should stay very similar with a higher chance of rain from Monday through Wednesday. Fairly typical early October weather I would say.

Goodbye to September 2017

Goodbye to September 2017

The last day of this month and it calls for a 'Goodbye to September 2017'.

It's 08.40am and it's cloudy and cool with a 26C current temperature with possibly a shower to be expected today. This would make it ten days with showers this month, after last night's rain. Maybe a little bit more than average during a September but not too far off. I enjoyed this month with the morning temperatures dropping although during the afternoons it was 'sticky' hot. Due to the high humidity.
There was plenty of sunshine as well during this month, so the sun lovers could enjoy the Samui beaches.
A good September I would say, close to an average September.

Goodbye to September 2017

Goodbye to September 2017; A box jelly protection net is placed at Ozo Hotel on Chaweng beach. There's one more box jelly protection net, in Lamai at Lamai Wanta Beach Resort.

It was a busy month on the running front for me, with 3 weekends with races including one long charity run, from North to South Samui. Six runners ran 32km starting at Aryaburi Resort in the North and ended at the Laem Sor Pagoda in the South after about three hours and 15 minutes. Exactly as was planned before hand. We managed to raise around 55,000.-THB plus numerous other, material gifts for the underprivileged children on the island.

Time to look forward to next month, October 2017, which will be a month to remember, with King's Bhumibol's funeral and cremation ceremony come 26th October. The whole month will be affected however by this event and many planned, big events may be cancelled throughout the month, so keep your eyes fixed on social media. The Full Moon Party scheduled for 5th October has already been cancelled.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017

It's late Sunday afternoon, and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017. Late in the day but not forgotten!

Today started out fairly cloudy but during the afternoon the sun started to break out a bit and came peeping through the clouds. The temperatures immediately went up a couple of notches. Current temperature at 4pm is 32C

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017; Bang Rak beach road during landing at Samui airport, shortly before 6pm, with the sun setting beautifully over the Gulf of Thailand

Last week saw only two days with some rain and the rest of the week ranged from partially cloudy to fairly sunny. It didn't get too hot, with max temperatures ranging between 30C and 34C. By no means did we have the torrential rain and flooding that happened on Phuket late last week!

From Monday to Thursday I was in Pattaya, visiting some friends. It had been a while since I was there. Pattaya is interesting and has it's pro and cons but for a few days I can enjoy it.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 11th September – 17th September, 2017; Pattaya beach road before noon time. Fairly quiet for traffic but the beach was rather busy.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th September – 10th September, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th September – 10th September, 2017

Sunday noon time, it's also time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th September – 10th September, 2017.
The sun is slowly breaking through over Koh Samui after a fairly cloudy morning. The bike riders of the Samui Festival tour or race around around the island will not have complained, their ride must have been a lot more agreeable without the sun.
The current temperature at noon is 30.8C but it feels like closing in to 40C. Hot and humid but there is a light trace of wind.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 4th September – 10th September, 2017; Chaweng beach yesterday during the official attempt of  having the worlds longest buffet. The attempt was successful and 2.5km of free food could be enjoyed yesterday. There were some nice surprises and good food to be had but it was also very busy. Within 30 minutes most af the food was gone!

Last week it was mostly partially cloudy with plenty of sunshine to be had and a very rare tropical shower to cool things off. Max temperatures ranged from 33c to 35C.

The forecast for next week around Koh Samui, which most of the week I will be spending in Pattaya, will be partially cloudy, maybe a bit more of short, tropical showers and the ind might be picking up from Thursday onward.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017

It's Sunday morning and time to have a look at Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017 and see how things were.
We have a sunny sky already during all morning, this Sunday and although the quicksilver tells us it's 'only' 30.4C at 10.40am, it feels a lot warmer, closing in on 38C!
Better be prepared for a hot and sticky day unless you can find a breeze or stay in an aircon controlled room or area.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 28th August – 3rd September, 2017; Food options at the Plai Laem market, some frogs and eels. Not for the faint hearted gourmets!
On most maps this market is listed as Bang Rak market, but Plai Laem starts after the bridge and that's exactly where the market is located!

Last week saw a bit of a mixed bag with mostly partially clouded skies, an occasional tropical shower and temperatures ranging between 30C and 34C.

Next week looks like it will be dry, possibly a rare tropical shower and mostly partially clouded skies. Warm and sunny might be an option as well! Enjoy your time on our island, it's not as busy anymore as a week ago and possibly a little bit more enjoyable with more space around you.

Welcome to September 2017

Welcome to September 2017

It's the first day of a new month and time to say Welcome to September 2017.
A lot of times the nice and mild August weather carries over into September, but not the last three years! Let's hope this will change this year.

This morning it's partially cloudy and at 8.30am it's a nice and cool 28.3C. Don't worry though, it will heat up later today or rather soon-ish. It already feels a lot warmer.
The forecast for the next ten days is partially cloudy with the possibility of a tropical shower.

Welcome to September 2017

Welcome to September 2017; Curry pastes and other delicacies at the Walking street event in Lamai

Plenty of running events coming up this month around Samui. From my perspective as a runner, a nice development to see!
Come 2nd September the Cancer Care run in Nathon at the Seatran pier will kick off at 7am. On 9th September the Samui Festival marathon at the Wharf (I will only run the 10km distance) will be around and this promises to be a big one, with over 900 runners signed up for the 10km distance in the various age categories. The 23rd will see the North - South charity run which is followed by the Mad Hatter run come 24th September, with another 10km run also at the Wharf. See you there?

Goodbye to August 2017

Goodbye to August 2017

The end of the month and time to say Goodbye to August 2017 under a nice and fairly sunny last day of the month. It's currently 30.7C at 10.50am and partially cloudy to sunny. How an August day on Koh Samui should be but how it wasn't all month long.

Last night we had some rain and during half of the days this month we had rain. Most of the time just some tropical showers, meaning short and possibly hard rain but we also had a couple of storms moving over our island this month.

Max temperatures ranged between 30C and 34C throughout the month, which is fairly steady and expected but in general it was not a great August with a bit more rain than average, in my opinion.

Goodbye to August 2017

Goodbye to August 2017; Car accident near the Bophud school yesterday. The driver must have gone very fast in order to park his or her car illegally upside down! Be careful out on the Koh Samui roads, it's dangerous out there!

Looking forward to next month! Plenty of races to be run on Samui, 2nd September the Cancer Care run in Nathon at the Seatran pier. 9th September the Samui Festival marathon at the Wharf (I will only run the 10km distance). The 23rd will see the North - South charity run which is followed by the Mad Hatter run come 24th, also at the Wharf. See you there?

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st August – 27th August, 2017

It's Sunday, just past noon and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 21st August – 27th August, 2017.

It was mostly cloudy over Koh Samui this morning but right now, around noon we have a lot more blue in the sky with a current temp of 28.8C and starting to heat up.

We're about to leave Khanom soon, back to Koh Samui. This morning I participated in the 3rd Khanom marathon, although I ran the half marathon distance, which I won in my age group 50-59 in one hour en 45 minutes. Pretty chuffed about that. It's fairly cloudy here with the sun started to pop out and a current temp of 29C

Last week it was hot and humid and four out of seven days saw some tropical rain showers. Max temperatures ranged between 32C and 34C. Fairly steady and typical for an average August on Koh Samui.

The pink dolphins is what Khanom is famous for and I've seen a pod play and hunt around a few months back at the Raja ferry in Donsak,

We may see some strong wind tonight and tomorrow but the rest of the coming week should be fairly nice and sunny! A nice and sunny end of this August month and a nice and warm start of Septembe seems to be in the cards!

She won the full marathon distance all over for females in a stunning 3:31. An amazing achievement Elena! Congratulations. Oh, and the trophy she won barely fitted in her car!

It's 9am and fairly cloudy over Koh Samui with a few occasional blue spots. It might possibly rain later today, so enjoy any sunbeam you can get this morning. Current temp at 9am is around 29C

Today is my last day on Phuket, the August PADI IDC on Phuket has been completed and my candidates are on the second and last day of their PADI IE, their Instructor exams. Tomorrow I will be on my way home to Koh Samui again.
It's partially cloudy here with a current temp of 30.6C at 9am.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 14th August – 20th August, 2017; The pier and the small harbor for local fisherman's boats, some private small sail yachts and plenty of tour trip boats at Plai Laem beach. A real marina!

Last week we had some rain between Tuesday and Thursday with all days of the week being partially cloudy. It was nice and warm though, all week long with temperatures ranging between 31C and 33C.
Maybe not as good as your average August week on Koh Samui should be but still a very enjoyable week.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th August – 13th August, 2017

Sunday morning and time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th August – 13th August, 2017.
It's nice and sunny this morning under a partially cloudy sky with a current temp at 8am of 29C

Since a week I find myself back on Phuket, for the August 2017 PADI IDC program. It's fairly cloudy here with a few blue spots in the sky but also a good chance of rain later today. Current temp at 8am is a cool and fresh 25C. A typical monsoon day on Phuket!

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 7th August – 13th August, 2017; The Big Buddha area. The road has now been paved, or rather cemented and the puddles are now a thing of the past at the Big Buddha area.

Last week saw a wet start of the week around Koh Samui with a few showers but than it remained dry for the second part of the week and it was very hot and humid around the island. Maximum temperatures last week were really steady between 32C and 33C.

The forecast for next week doesn't look too great, especially not for an August on Koh Samui. Mid week there may be some some hard wind and each day may see a tropical shower. It will keep things cool but hopefully there will be some sunshine as well each day.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 31st July – 06th August, 2017

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 31st July – 06th August, 2017

It's Sunday, we're around 10am and it's time for the Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 31st July – 06th August, 2017.

It;s mostly cloudy on Koh Samui with a current temp at 10am of 30C

Yesterday I arrived on Phuket with my wife and our youngest daughter. It rained very hard last night when we woke up around 3am, with a strong wind blowing. Now, around 10am it's partially cloudy and nice again. Current temp at 10am on Kata on Phuket is 29,3C

We went shopping for her shop at Big Buddha and I ran the Bangkok Airways Phuket half marathon with a 5am start. A race in the same series as the Bangkok Airways Koh Samui marathon. Six weeks ago I also ran the half marathon.
I ran a little bit faster compared to the Koh Samui marathon but competition is much stiffer here and with a 1:51'03 time, I came in 53rd of 711 participants and 8th in my age category of 50-59 with 55 participants. Alas, there were only 5 trophies.

This afternoon it's back to Koh Samui and tomorrow I will drive back to Phuket again to start the August 2017 PADI IDC on Phuket.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 31st July – 06th August, 2017; Masjid Nurdud Hidaya or a new Mosque under construction in Bang Rak

Last week saw mostly partially clouded skies overt Koh Samui with a very rare tropical shower thrown in for good measure. Maximum temperatures ranged from 32C to 34C and a lot of times it felt a lot warmer.

Koh Samui, Thailand weekly weather update; 31st July – 06th August, 2017; A Chinese temple at Sapan Hin on Phuket, near the start and finish of the Phuket half marathon that I ran earlier this morning

The forecast for next week is looking good. Cloudy to partially cloudy skies with a rare tropical shower, most likely today or tonight. Towards the end of the week and next weekend the sun might be out and shows off it's presence a bit more.

Enjoy this first  August week of August 2017!

Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017

Next month will see the Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017, during which a maximum number of ten runners will run from Koh Samui's most Northern poit, Samrong Bay at 4am to Koh Samui's most Southern point at Laem Sor Pagoda.

The total distance will be 32km and it will be run as a group at a 6'00 minute per kilometer pace. This is not a race but an all start together, all finish together event. The event is held in conjunction with the Samui Runners Club.

Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017

Run Samui, North to South run, 23rd September, 2017

Last year this event involved a run around the island and each year we're looking for a different distance and route.

This year the chosen charity is the 'Blue Home', a project of the 'Pai Douai Foundation'. A dormitory is being build in the South Western part of the island for disadvantaged children and children in need.

Last year 140,000.-THB was raised to help build the school for children with special needs. This year we hope to equal that and get the same amount of money through donations.

Start of the races will be around 6am.

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017

Since 2011 I was able to participate in six consecutive events and it looks like I can add event number seven this year! I'm looking forward to that!

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017; the flyer for this years event has a picture of me at the start from one of their earlier races.

It is a charity event and all proceed will go towards improvement of cancer treatment. The race is inspired by Terry Fox's Marathon of hope in 1980. With one leg amputated he planned on running from east - west cross Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3,339 mi), and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$650 million has been raised in his name.

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017

10th Cancer care run, 2nd September 2017; This years route.

This is where the Four Seasons come in. The hotel chain originated in Canada and during Terry's marathon of hope, he was often invited to stay over in Four Seasons resorts.

Fox arrived in Montreal on June 22, one-third of the way through his 8,000-kilometre (5,000 mi) journey, having collected over $200,000 in donations. Around this time, Terry Fox's run caught the attention of Isadore Sharp who was the founder and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts – and who had lost a son to melanoma in 1978 just a year after Terry's diagnosis. Sharp was intrigued by the story of a one-legged kid "trying to do the impossible" and run across the country; so he offered food and accommodation at his hotels en route. When Terry was discouraged because so few people were making donations, Sharp pledged $2 a mile [to the run] and persuaded close to 1,000 other corporations to do the same. Sharp's encouragement persuaded Terry to continue with the Marathon of Hope.

Hope to see you come Saturday 2nd September, at 6am at the Nathon pier starting point.

4th Mad hatter run Sunday 24th September at 'The Wharf'

The 4th Mad hatter run Sunday 24th September at 'The Wharf' is coming up next month. There are three different distances on offer; 2,5 and 10km, each distance with start and finish at 'The Wharf'.

This is a race event organised by the Marriott Hotels, on Koh Samui being the Vana Bell, A Luxury Collection, the Sheraton Samui Resort, the W Koh Samui, Le Meridien Koh Samui Resort & Spa and the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa. It's held at the same day all over Thailand, where there are Marriott hotels.

The first two years I was able to participate on Koh Samui's event but last year the event was postponed due to the passing away of King Bhumibol, and it was rescheduled in November. Last year I managed to participate in the Phuket event.

This year I may not be able to participate at all, since I may be on Koh Phangan. Nonetheless, this shouldn't stop any of you in participating!

4th Samui tattoo convention at Central Festival, 16-18 August

It's already the 4th Samui tattoo convention at Central Festival, 16-18 August coming up! Last years event was held in April, now we're already in August.

It will be a good time to get some ink done. Besides many local tattoo artists, there will also be artists coming from all over Thailand, including Pattaya, Hau Hin, Phuket and Bangkok. There will be also international guests; Danis Nguyen from Vietnam and Ly Ling from Malaysia.

Many different styles and forms of tattooing will be available,  from machine to bamboo. Do your homework and get the artwork you like and want. Many of the artists will also be happy to make appointments with you after this event, if you like or prefer somebody's specific style.
